Research on MCP Server Monetization

MCP servers are rapidly becoming central infrastructure for AI workflows, and early adopters are seeing meaningful and diverse sources of profit—especially as integration needs in SaaS, e-commerce, and automation sectors explode.

Initially, MCP was often limited to local development. However, the focus is now on remote MCP servers that are accessible over the internet with proper authentication and authorization (using OAuth). This transition is compared to the shift from desktop software to web-based software, opening up MCP capabilities to a much wider audience beyond just developers.

This allows AI agents to perform actions beyond simple inference and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), enabling them to send emails, deploy code, publish content, and interact with various web services.

The emphasis is on building robust, secure, and easily consumable “tools” that solve specific problems, with flexible pricing models (usage-based, subscription, outcome-based) being key to capturing value in this evolving landscape.

Examples that can be widely used are CSV Cleaner MCP: Upload messy spreadsheets, return clean, structured data. Resume Optimizer MCP: Take raw resumes and optimize them for ATS systems. GPT Detector MCP: Scan and detect AI-generated content in essays, blogs, or academic papers.

Stripe’s new MCP-friendly billing API allows you to charge users for access without setting up a separate payment portal. You can launch with usage tiers, API keys, and subscriptions in just a few lines of code.

21st.Dev MCP server is so far the most commercially successful. Simply tell the AI Agent what component you need by typing /ui and describing your idea – whether it’s a pricing table, contact form, or navigation menu. Moesif takes a completely different approach—they don’t provide content, they provide the infrastructure for others to monetize their MCP servers.

Moesif gives you the infrastructure to treat your server like a product: observable, billable, and sustainable. Monetizing MCP (Model Context Protocol) Servers with Moesif | Moesif Blog They specifically address the challenge that MCP servers are not traditional REST APIs, but rather execution surfaces for agents, they require more deliberate thinking about what to meter. But as of July 2025, the market is still heavily concentrated among developers, though this may change as more user-friendly solutions emerge and rapidly grow!
